January tulips

January tulips

As I mentioned in this quick post, I’ve been a little bored lately, stuck inside and not taking many photos. So I decided to do something about it by picking up some white tulips at the grocery store, setting up my studio lights and black backdrop, loading some film into holders and getting the 4x5 camera going again. It was also a good chance to give my lumu light meter a test under some controlled conditions.

I exposed six sheets in total, each carefully exposed and composed. It’s always fun working with the big camera — it’s a very slow and deliberate process — making me take time with each sheet. The meter held up quite well, giving me exposure settings that seem pretty spot on. It was a little difficult focussing as the tulips are quite white, but I think I got pretty close.

I’m not a big fan of the still life, or flowers, but you have to make do with what you can. The skies are grey, the wind is cold and the days are short so I have to get my shooting time in when I can. It was a fun couple of hours with my makeshift home studio and I think the results are encouraging enough to make me keep at it. Now, what’s next to go under the lights?
