Things I Like: Leuchtturm1917 Medium Notebook

This post is over 3 years old. Some information may be out-of-date!

Even in the age of laptops, netbooks, tablets and smartphones I still like to carry around a good old-fashioned paper notebook with me wherever I go. I have a thing for notebooks, but I tend to go for the lesser-known brands. That means I don’t own a Moleskin, a bit trendy for me. I could spend hours in stationary shops flipping through notebooks and testing out the pens. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t leave home without my iPhone, it too is awesome. But it just doesn’t feel right when I’m trying to record some thoughts or lay down a quick sketch.

So while I was in Ontario early in 2010 visiting family and friends, my mom and I wandered into a stationary shop. We were a few minutes early meeting my sister, brother and sister-in-law for dinner and across the street from the restaurant was a very tempting shop called Write Impressions. It’s the sort of place I could live in. We wandered around and after I started to thumb through the notebooks, one in particular caught my eye. I like a notebook with a good, dark, protective cover and an elastic fastener. There are lots of those around, so I flipped it open to get a feel for the paper. Now this is going to sound really geeky, but you can tell all you need to know about a notebook by just rubbing a piece of its paper between your thumb and forefinger. And let me tell you, it took all of half a second for me to know I had to have this notebook. The paper is beautiful and ink-proof, the perfect weight and finish. Pages are subtly numbered in the lower corners and, a feature I have to have, blank.

The notebook also has an envelope in the back for holding loose items, a fabric bookmark, and comes with stickers for labelling the cover and spine. It also lays flat without any help which I think is a must-have feature.

So put all those great features together and for me, I found a perfect notebook: the Leuchtturm1917 Medium. I haven’t seen it anywhere else but that shop, but if you can get your hands on one, I highly recommend it.
