I think Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is one of my favourite species of tree. It grows in shady places where most conifers refuse to grow, and it lives to a ripe old age. There are a few large specimens in Nova Scotia, some located in Kejumkujik National Park. There’s a nice walk through one of the oldest stands and it’s quite magical. They’re also scattered throughout the rest of the park and make for great subjects.

I think it’s important when walking through the woods to stop now and then and take a look up. There’s another world up there, well worth a few moments of consideration.
